Cardioversion treats some cardiac arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats). In non-emergency situations, this most often includes atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. In emergencies, cardioversion can treat ventricular tachycardia. The goal of cardioversion is to restore a normal heartbeat.
Are There Other Treatment Options?
In most cases, doctors recommend cardioversion when other treatments have not successfully restored a normal heartbeat. Other treatments include medicines to control heart rate and heart rhythm.
Ask your doctor about all of your treatment options and consider getting a second opinion before deciding on cardioversion.
When to Consider Cardioversion
You may want to consider cardioversion if medicines have not helped or you experience symptoms, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, and palpitations.
Your doctor may decide that you are a good candidate for cardioversion if:
- You have had an arrhythmia for a short time. This means you are more likely to stay in a normal rhythm after cardioversion.
- Your atria (upper chambers) are not enlarged.
- Your circulation, blood vessels, and heart function are stable.
Who Is NOT a Good Candidate for Cardioversion?
You may not be a good candidate if:
- Your arrhythmia is due to drug toxicity or another known cause.
- You have a blood clot in your heart.
- You are not taking anticoagulant medicines and are not able to have a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE).
- You have a severe illness or infection.
What to Expect
A cardiologist performs cardioversion in a hospital. Electrical cardioversion is the most common type. Your doctor may also recommend pharmacologic cardioversion with medicines.
You may have sedation or anesthesia, and you will likely go home the same day.
Many people feel immediate relief of symptoms after cardioversion. Ask your doctor about returning to activities safely.
Cardioversion can restore a normal heartbeat, but it is only one part of your treatment. Follow your doctor’s instructions for taking medicines and making heart-healthy lifestyle habits.
